We will have a table at the Out in West Texas Symposium in Midland on Friday, November 3 and Saturday, November 4. If you’re attending, please stop by and say “hello!”. We’d love to see you.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Midland, in coordination with the Transgender Education Network of Texas, and the Texas State Bar LGBT Section, are organizing Out in West Texas: A Symposium on Professional Competencies for Serving Transgender Clients for the purpose of fostering the growth of a network of providers in West Texas trained in both professional and cultural competencies. O.I.W.T. seeks to train medical, legal, mental health, and educational providers of the West Texas region in professional competencies associated with working with transgender clients, as well as to provide training in transgender affirming practices.
The Symposium features interdisciplinary training in medical, legal and mental health foundations and breakout sessions to foster greater understanding in addressing various transgender cultural competencies. It also provides a forum for interested participants from diverse professional backgrounds – including educational, journalistic, criminal justice, faith-based, or other community service backgrounds- to gain knowledge and competency with regard to serving, interacting with, and/or reporting on transgender clients.
